Saints March To A Super Bowl Victory

Posted 2/08/2010 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

drew-brees1.jpgIt wasn’t exactly a classic Super Bowl, but it was the latest in a string of very good Super Bowls.  In the end, it was two surprise plays that won the game moreso than anything Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees did:  Peyton Manning’s win-sealing interception and an onside kick to start the second half.  Those are the two plays that turned the tide of Super Bowl XLIV and gave the New Orleans Saints the victory.

As shocking as Manning’s pick-six was, it was merely a sign of the changes in the game plan made by Saints coach Sean Peyton during halftime.  With his team down at the half, Peyton went from safe coach playing not to lose to a riverboat gambler, and it was that onside kick that started things off right.  After that, Gregg Williams was able to dial up more blitzes, get more pressure on Manning, and that allowed the corner backs to play their man more aggressively, leading to Tracy Porter’s interception.

Next thing you know, Reggie Wayne is dropping a pass in the end zone and there’s a party on Bourbon Street for the victorious New Orleans Saints.

Man Arrested For Telling Kids To Get Off His Lawn With Bullets

Posted 9/07/2010 12:00 pm by Ron Hogan

It was like a scene out of Gran Torino.  When confronting a group of youths on the lawn of his Uniondale, Long Island home, 31-year-old George Grier went out onto his porch with a rifle.  He told the group of youths to get off his lawn.  During the ensuing argument, Grier did what every movie [...]

Non-Stick Pans Raise Child Cholesterol

Posted 9/07/2010 11:30 am by Ron Hogan

Sometimes, you get a bit of strange news that actually reinforces a prejudice.  For example, I’ve always preferred the taste of food cooked on a legitimate, cast iron skillet over the taste of food cooked in an aluminum, non-stick frying pan.  Yes, it’ll stick and burn and look like Jesus, and no, I don’t care. [...]

What A Crappy Cake

Posted 9/07/2010 11:00 am by Ron Hogan

When you think of good customer service, what are the places you think of as providing the opposite of that?  Obviously, one of the first things out of any reasonable person’s mouth (aside from the DMV) is the post office.  There’s always a line, it’s usually understaffed, it’s going bankrupt, and generally, it’s a huge [...]

German School Kids Given Celebratory Porno Pens

Posted 9/07/2010 10:30 am by Ron Hogan

At first, the school children returning to their learning tasks at Adolf Reichwein School in the northwestern city of Essen, Germany, were probably bummed out.  Yes, they got their traditional paper cone full of back-to-school candy, but volunteers from the German Communist Party (who were handing out the sugary propaganda) had also inserted pens into [...]

Black Widow Wins Buffalo Wing-Eating Contest

Sonya Thomas is a tiny, tiny woman.  She’s probably 5 feet tall and 105 pounds, on a good day.  However, if you see this spritely-looking woman heading towards your all-you-can-eat buffet, lock the doors, pull the shades, and hope against hope that she doesn’t see you inside, because she’ll eat you out of house and [...]

The New World’s Shortest Man

Edward Nino Hernandez hasn’t grown since he was two years old, according to his mother Noemi Hernandez.  Doctors studied him for awhile, but then lost interest.  No one knows why Edward Nino Hernandez is only 27 inches tall, but Guinness doesn’t care about reasons, they just need measurements.  The 24-year-old Colombian is officially in the [...]

Georgia Town Passes Anti-Sagging Law

Posted 9/07/2010 9:00 am by Ron Hogan

If you’re heading to Dublin, Georgia, you’d better pull up your pants.  Or, at least, make sure you don’t have your underwear on display for all the world to see.  Dublin, Georgia, is the latest town to pass an anti-sagging pants ordinance, which criminalizes visible boxer shorts.  The ordinance defines sagging as wearing your pants [...]

Music War: Apple Vs. Google

Posted 9/07/2010 8:30 am by Ron Hogan

One thing that can never be said about Google is that they’re afraid of anyone.  Google is going after Facebook’s dominance in real-time information.  Google is challenging Windows in the OS arena.  And now, rumor has it, Google is going to challenge Apple in the music business by launching a download store, digital footlocker, and [...]

It’s kind of bucking the trend on these things.  Rather than warn of impending zombie attack or advise readers on how to properly rock out, a recent road sign hacking in Seattle, Washington, has decided to be less helpful and more insulting.  One of those yellow and black traffic signs near South Seattle Community College [...]

Christmas In September

It’s probably the longest standard Christmas season in the world.  In the Phillippines, from San Juan to Manila, September means Christmas.  Oddly enough, the Phillippine Christmas season generally runs 115 days, from September 1 until well after the actual day of Christmas.  And I thought Christmas decorations in October was bad!
However, while their national Christmas [...]

The call came in on Tuesday.  Two young goats were stranded on the narrow ledge of a railroad bridge where it passes over a little-used stretch of road between Billings and Roundup in Montana.  The only problem was, nobody could pinpoint where exactly this was (that should tell you how remote this area is).  It [...]
